Senior Packaging Engineer, Vernon Hills, IL

Position:
Packaging Engineering Leader responsible for developing and qualifying packaging solutions for aseptic and non-aseptic medical devices, ensuring alignment with domestic and international guidelines and standards. Lead design control processes for medium and high complexity projects; own packaging systems specifications and drive packaging strategy within multi-functional teams.

• Own BDG's (Business Development Goals) packaging strategy and ensure alignment with customer needs and regulatory requirements.
• Translate customer needs into engineering requirements and lead to specific packaging and process specifications.
• Lead complex projects impacting design inputs/outputs, verification by testing/analysis, from start to finish.
• Ensure appropriate multi-functional strategy and risk management to meet specifications and timelines.
• Represent the R&D Packaging Function on cross-functional teams to drive packaging strategy.
• Mentor junior team members and proactively develop, maintain & share technical knowledge in specialized areas.
• Communicate effectively and influence decisions among project teams and leadership reviews.
• Maintain up-to-date expertise on current trends and company policies related to packaging.

• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Mechanical, Biomedical Engineering or related technical field; equivalent experience considered; advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum 5–8 years of experience in packaging engineering within the medical device or drug development industries.
• Proven track record in developing packaging systems for sterile medical devices and/or pharmaceutical products.
• Understanding of ISO 11607-1 & 2, ISO 13485, ISO 16975, ICH Guidelines, and packaging-related ASTM/ISTA standards.
• Expertise in DFSS, statistical analysis, and Design of Experiments (DOE).
• Ability to define and document packaging requirements for sterile solutions.
• Experience with packaging design software (e.g., CAPE, TOPS) and Solid Works.
• Skilled in verification and validation of sterile packaging systems and regulatory compliance.
• Experience developing PFMEA and DFMEA for packaging processes.
• Experience performing FEA to evaluate and optimize packaging designs.
• Strong understanding of core engineering principles and first-principles analyses applied to packaging challenges.
