Job Description

Rehabilitation Therapy Technician V performs advanced, senior‑level rehabilitative therapy work. Duties include developing and implementing a hospital‑wide recreational activity program, training new and experienced technicians, maintaining supplies and equipment inventory, providing individualized instruction to assist patients in reaching optimal performance, and documenting patient progress. The role requires working independently with significant initiative and judgment within a multidisciplinary recovery team.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend work regularly and adhere to specified shift schedules, including rotating, extended, or overtime shifts as needed.
  • Lead creation and execution of activity‑based functional and recreational programs for patient populations.
  • Schedule and instruct patients in therapeutic activities such as exercise, arts and crafts, and outdoor sports.
  • Modify, integrate, and implement programs for patients with diverse disabilities, cognitive levels, and behavioral issues.
  • Coordinate hospital‑wide activities with other departments.
  • Develop and oversee curriculum; evaluate activities to enhance patient challenges and maintain physical ability.
  • Provide training and continuing education to other technicians, students, and volunteers.
  • Prepare materials, maintain inventory, and order supplies as required.
  • Operate a department vehicle, transport clients, and adhere to all driving policies.
  • Observe and document patient behavior, level of participation, and progress; communicate findings to enhance treatment goals.
  • Complete documentation in the computer‑based medical record and monthly activity reports.
  • Participate in performance improvement programs, committees, and special work groups.
  • Assist in developing plans of correction when deficiencies and standards are identified.
  • Ensure therapeutic facilities are clean, safe, and compliant with infection control and safety regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activities.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

(KSAs)
  • Knowledge of standards, policies, and procedures relevant to rehabilitation therapy.
  • Understanding of the rehabilitative process and necessary skills/adaptations for optimal patient engagement.
  • Strong working knowledge of group dynamics and application to recovery.
  • Knowledge of mental illness, mental disabilities, and safe application of rehabilitative therapy.
  • Skill in observing and identifying patient behavior.
  • Skill in utilizing recreation and leisure activities.
  • Skill in using equipment, tools, and materials for therapeutic activities.
  • Ability to provide rehabilitative therapy.
  • Ability to assess patients’ functional levels and plan individualized instruction.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to train others and plan work activities.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or obtain within 90 days of hire if transporting patients; out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
  • Certified in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
  • Certified Rehab Therapy Technician (PTA) or obtain the certification within one year.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or three years’ experience working with individuals who have mental illnesses or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Associate degree in a rehabilitation area preferred.
  • Three (3) years’ experience developing treatment and support plans for people with mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
