The Custodian II provides moderately complex custodial services in a state hospital setting. The position requires maintaining a safe and clean environment, operating maintenance equipment, and performing minor repairs. The role supports disaster response, continuity of operations, and may include work at maximum‑security locations.
Key Responsibilities- Clean, dust, disinfect, and sanitize interior and exterior areas of the hospital, including floors, restrooms, and nursing stations.
- Operate floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors.
- Maintain and restock supplies, and request new items as necessary.
- Assist in building and equipment inspections, reporting needed repairs, and performing minor maintenance and installations.
- Maintain custodial equipment in good working order and document inventory and usage.
- Support disaster response and continuity of operations (COOP) by participating in alternate shift patterns or locations.
- Administer other duties as assigned, including maximum‑security pay eligibility if applicable.
- Attend work on a regular basis with flexibility for specific shifts, overtime, or rotating schedules.
- Perform custodial duties timely and with high quality, ensuring sanitization and disinfection per training.
- Clean floors, restrooms, nursing stations, and other areas following established procedures.
- Empty trash, report needed repairs, and replenish supplies.
- Coach and assist other custodians, when needed.
- Inspect assigned buildings and areas, perform minor repairs, and maintain records.
- Complete documentation accurately and protect confidential information.
- Assist patients in maintaining optimal health and a safe environment.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in the use of custodial equipment, chemicals, and safe handling procedures.
- Skills in building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work timely.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Minimum six months of custodial or environmental services experience.
- Preferred experience in nursing homes, hospitals, residential facilities, hotels, or similar settings.

• Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and LEIE.
• Be at least 18 years of age (21 for Waco Center for Youth applicants).
• Comply with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures. Vaccination against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza is required; non‑vaccinated individuals may need to wear a mask.
• Provide required I‑9 documentation and may be required to use E‑Verify.
• Flexibility in work hours may be required for overtime or extended shifts.
