Brief

Job Description

Perform highly complex vocational nursing work. Provide for the care, treatment, and general welfare of individuals residing at the State Hospital who have complex mental health, behavioral, and medical diagnoses. Perform basic and complex routine and non‑routine nursing tasks to promote health. Collect specimens, conduct health screenings, instruct staff, perform technical nursing procedures, and maintain compliance with policies and procedures. Provide direction and training to new LVNs and direct‑care staff.

Assist RNs with protocols, quality assurance, and therapeutic programs. Work under general supervision of an RN with moderate latitude for initiative and judgement.

Perform duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, continuity of operations, and alternate shift patterns or locations. May earn additional pay for evening, night, weekend, and maximum security work.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work regularly, adhere to shift schedules, overtime, and rotating schedules.
  • Administer medications and treatments, assist other medical staff, make rounds.
  • Demonstrate competency in complex technical nursing tasks according to regulations.
  • Train/instruct new LVN staff, acclimate them to individuals’ needs and preferences.
  • Perform complex procedures such as wound care and breathing treatments.
  • Collect specimens and conduct screening tests.
  • Monitor weight, diet, meals, vital signs, and health status after treatments.
  • Document and report treatments accurately in the medical record.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and communication.
  • Serve as a resource/mentor to new LVNs.
  • Assist RNs with protocol implementation and quality assurance.
  • Provide education to individuals about procedures and medication.
  • Ensure supplies are available and properly stocked.
  • Respond to emergency situations and follow safety procedures.
  • Participate in disaster response or continuity of operations as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, CPR, and assessment skills.
  • Reasoning skills to identify problems and resolve situations.
  • Computer operation skills.
  • Patient care skills.
  • Ability to care for individuals with complex issues.
  • Record preparation and EHR use.
  • Effective communication and instruction.
  • Interaction with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • Current CPR certification; strength and flexibility for CPR and TIPS.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements, or Certifications

Licensed to practice as a licensed vocational nurse in Texas or a state with reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

For patient transport, hold a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.

Initial Screening Criteria
  • Graduation from an LVN program.
  • Minimum six months employment experience as an LVN (twelve months preferred).
  • Six months of experience working or volunteering with persons with mental illness (preferred).
