The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is seeking a Nurse Manager for Vernon State Hospital.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate nursing care on a 24‑hour basis.
  • Direct daily operations in assigned areas and ensure a competent workforce.
  • Provide clinical direction and ensure care aligns with patient characteristics and regulatory standards, including HHSC rules, the Texas Administrative Code, and the Texas State Board of Nursing.
  • Develop nursing policies and procedures consistent with professional practice standards.
  • Supervise and coach nursing staff, manage staffing plans to guarantee continuous availability.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives such as QAPI, performance audits, and peer reviews.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with recovery teams, families, and external agencies.
  • Conduct risk management, safety monitoring, and documentation of adverse events.
  • Assist in budget preparation related to patient activity and staffing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response or continuity of operations.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse license in Texas or another state recognized under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an RN in a health agency, hospital, or similar setting, or 3 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, nursing standards, psychiatric rehabilitation practices, the recovery model, and regulatory frameworks such as the Texas Administrative Code, The Joint Commission, and CMS.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and coaching skills.
  • Ability to supervise staff, develop training, manage time and resources.
  • Proficiency with computer hardware and software, and knowledge of restraint and seclusion protocols.
  • Ability to manage budgets and analyze data for performance improvement.
  • Ability to provide patient and family education.
