Under the direct supervision of the Chief Nurse Executive/Nurse Administrator/Assistant Chief Nurse Executive, you will observe, assess, plan, intervene and evaluate outcomes and document all aspects of patient care. You will possess unique knowledge regarding the patient population to be served, coordinate scheduling within assigned areas, provide primary management for the service area, guide and evaluate nursing staff, and collaborate with the Nurse Coordinator, other charge nurses, and Mental Health Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24‑hour continuity of care.
You may assume duties of the Nurse Coordinator/Nurse Manager during absences. You will provide direct nursing care to individual patients as needed and perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, continuity of operations (COOP), and other agency obligations. You may be eligible for additional pay for evening, night, weekend, and maximum security duties.
- Assess the health/mental status of patients on admission, transfer, and ongoing basis; document assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation to determine priorities and plan therapeutic nursing care.
- Provide direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units; address performance problems promptly and maintain accurate documentation of interventions.
- Facilitate a smooth admission and/or transfer process; communicate with admissions staff and unit staff; review written documentation and triage patients when needed.
- Carry out medical staff practitioners’ orders and implement nursing interventions according to acceptable standards and hospital policies.
- Implement special precautions and restraints/seclusion procedures; protect patients from self or other harm while upholding patient rights.
- Attend mandatory training and ongoing in‑service education; monitor treatment, intervention, and protection strategies (TIPS) during episodes of patient restraint.
- Communicate openly with senior nursing leaders to obtain current information and disseminate to staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response and other agency obligations.

- Knowledge of American Nurses Association Nursing Standards.
- Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act.
- Skills in supervisory and management techniques.
- Skills and ability to perform CPR, aggression management, restraint techniques, and emergency care.
- Skills for positive interaction with patients, staff, families, and the public.
- Ability to handle crisis situations calmly.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use sound judgement and critical thinking skills.
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact).
