Brief

Job Description

A Licensed Vocational Nurse II provides highly complex nursing care to residents of Vernon State Hospital, promoting health and well‑being in a secure forensic psychiatric setting. The role includes clinical assessments, medication administration, wound care, patient education, interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and participation in disaster response and continuity of operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex nursing tasks and procedures in accordance with HHSC, hospital, and state regulations.
  • Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection.
  • Collect specimens, conduct health screenings, and monitor vital signs.
  • Document all patient care accurately in electronic health records.
  • Provide direct training and mentorship to new LVNs and nursing assistants.
  • Assist RNs with protocol implementation, quality assurance, and infection control.
  • Participate in disaster response and continuity of operations as required.
  • Maintain supplies, inventory, and order necessary equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations and follow safety procedures.
Qualifications & Education
  • Graduation from an LVN program and license to practice in Texas (or a reciprocity state).
  • Minimum six months experience as an LVN; twelve months preferred.
  • Preferred experience working or volunteering with persons with mental illness.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Valid Texas driver license if transporting patients.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently under RN supervision and adapt to complex environments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Proficiency in nursing care standards, procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Skilled in using reasoning to solve problems and determine appropriate actions.
  • Competent with computer systems and electronic health record software.
  • Effective interpersonal communication with patients, families, and staff.
  • Capability to handle both individual and group training needs.
Background & Eligibility
  • Passes required background, drug screen, and immunization checks.
  • Compliance with immunization policy and standard health precautions.
