Groundskeeping Department
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance, and repair work on building systems in accordance with recognized codes and standards for various trades such as plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting and electrical. Uses hand tools or equipment while performing repairs or inspections. Follows directions in performance of duties.
- Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building, building system or adapt it to new uses. Identifies necessary information such as time required to perform repair/renovation and physical location of necessary repair/renovation.
- Uses hand tools, power tools, test and safety equipment as necessary to perform needed repairs/renovations/installations.
- Accurately process and maintain records on work orders, projects, and material requisitions.
- May operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc. as necessary.
- May train others on the proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Skills And Abilities

- Knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration, and/or electrical systems
- Knowledge of industrial safety, fire, and safety regulations
- Knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration, and/or electrical systems.
- Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
- Skill in preventive maintenance, inspections of buildings and building systems.
- Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools and equipment
- Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, and to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with other members of the maintenance/facility team.
Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening CriteriaOne (1) year of work experience in electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling. Completion of trade school in any of the above may be substituted for experience.
Additional InformationApplicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
