Overview
Performs a variety of library tasks requiring knowledge of library practices and procedures. This is a paraprofessional position working under the general direction of a higher-level staff person or supervisor.
Responsibilities- Checks in and out materials.
- Inspects materials for damage.
- Collects fines and fees.
- Assists patrons with basic informational questions.
- Sorts materials and prepares for re-shelving.
- Issues and updates library cards according to established policies and procedures.
- Provides basic patron assistance.
- Shelves materials, shelf-reads assigned areas, and straightens collection as needed.
High School Diploma / GED supplemented by a minimum of (2) two years of related working experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations- None
- Knowledge of the organization of the library and the Dewey Decimal system.
- Ability to operate computers and related library software.
- Ability to enforce library rules and regulations tactfully.
- Ability to handle situations of security with mature judgment.
- Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to handle funds received for library fines and to make correct change.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with staff and the public.
- Ability to push and pull heavy book carts and repetitively shelve large, moderate to heavy books.
Work is performed inside in a library setting.
