The Assistant Fire Chief of Shift Operations is an exempt senior administrative position responsible for overseeing shift activities to ensure that standards and conduct are upheld among all shift personnel. This role involves coordinating and managing the shift command staff, which includes Battalion Chiefs and Captains. The Assistant Fire Chief of Shift Operations reports directly to the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.
Key responsibilities include directing, supervising, and evaluating various aspects such as fire command, personnel management, shift activities, station readiness, vehicle readiness, and any other tasks assigned by the administration.

Job Duties:
- Serve as a senior officer and member of the executive management team.
- Assists the fire administration through participation in the senior administrative team to analyze performance and service delivery.
- Assists with the development of directives, standard operating procedures, policies, general orders, short- and long-range plans, and quality control procedures.
- Observe and assess operational skills of shift personnel during the performance of their duties.
- Responsible for ensuring that the rules and regulations, policies, and general orders as they relate to discipline, leave, working conditions, grievances/complaints, and the distribution of work are uniform and equitable.
- Provide oversight of shift personnel training and productivity.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals of personnel under their immediate command.
- Instill cooperation with all three shift command staff and all department divisions.
- Review various materials for compliance with Fire Rescue policies and state and federal laws and regulations.
- Perform department duties as assigned by the Deputy Fire Chiefs and Fire Chief.
- Assists Internal Affairs with the investigations involving alleged misconduct, harassment, discrimination, fraud, or violations of departmental policies.
- Assist the administration in the preparation and management of the annual department budget.
- Prepare and review reports and keep records as required by the administration.
- Build and maintain relationships within and outside the department to maintain collaboration and strong relationships.
- Assist with creating strategic plans, programs, missions, and goals for the department.
- Respond to emergency incidents to ensure proper scene management and take command as necessary, which may occur after hours, and other situations deemed necessary by the Deputy Fire Chiefs and/or Fire Chief.
- Participate and represent the department and/or organize other shift personnel to do so for civic and community activities as required by the administration.
Typical Requirements:
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in an emergency service-related field required.
- Ten years of fire service experience.
- Five years senior leadership experience.
- Large scale emergency activation ICS experience.
- Florida certified Fire Officer II, III, or Executive is desired.
- Florida certified Fire Instructor, Inspector, and/or Investigator is desired
An equivalent combination of education and experience determined by the Fire Chief to be directly related to the specific requirements may be substituted.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Current valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
- Current valid Florida Paramedic license.
- Florida Fire Officer I
- ICS-100, 200, 700, 800, G300/400.
- Current ACLS provider certification.
- Basic life support.
- Advanced cardiac life support.
- Must have and maintain the appropriate class of driver's license as required by Florida Statutes.
The Fire Chief reserves the right to change the eligibility and qualification requirements. An equivalent combination of education and experience that the Fire Chief determines to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Physical ability to perform the duties required for firefighting and emergency medicine, with the capability of working in prolonged arduous/adverse conditions.
Possess extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and equipment employed in modern firefighting and emergency medicine.
Knowledge of the principles of fire, public safety, and/or emergency service management.
Knowledge of the laws and regulations concerning fire, and emergency medical services in the State of Florida.
Knowledge of the use of fire, medical, and special operations equipment and procedures common to the fire and emergency medical fields.
Skilled in planning, organizing, and delegating critical incident responses.
Skilled in assessing personnel, equipment, and apparatus for and during emergency responses.
