Summary
The purpose of the position is to operate a variety of motor vehicles to transport patients, staff, cargo, and mail in support of facility operations. Work may require operating vehicles over local, intercity, and interstate routes.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 06/15/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element (usually question 1 in the online questionnaire). Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Drive Safely, Interpret Instructions – Specifications (mobile equipment operations), Motor Vehicles. Without more than normal supervision.
Work Practices:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide training that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. A full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week.
Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours per week.
Physical Requirements /
Working Conditions:
Incumbent must frequently handle objects weighing up to 40 lbs and occasionally more, endure prolonged periods of driving, and perform minor emergency repairs such as tire changing during duties. Incumbent is required to work away from their home clinic in all types of weather and traffic conditions. They are exposed to the danger of serious accidents and operate the vehicles in congested traffic on regular and interstate highways.
Must deal and interact with patients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities. Possibility of cuts, bruises, strains. This position is subject to overtime work.
- Operate various types of vehicles to and from medical facilities and designated stops.
- Adhere to transport schedules while operating safely and complying with all applicable traffic laws.
- Complete vehicle inspections and transportation logs.
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery; inspect all items for physical condition, quantity, status, and obtain signatures as needed.
- Maintain and submit required paperwork and logs associated with cargo/mail duties.
- Perform vehicle‑related safety and compliance responsibilities in support of transportation operations.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure safe operating condition.
- Identify and report mechanical issues to service level leadership/supervisors.
- Keep the Fleet/Transportation Supervisor fully informed of any variations in job assignments.
- Complete and maintain required trainings.
- Provide interim support to other FMS/Engineering Personnel as assigned.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of vehicles and vehicle accessories.
- Knowledge of all VHA – VISN Medical Center Policies, Procedures, and processes.
- Skill in Microsoft platforms.
- Meet the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions.
- Communicate and treat customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) courteously, tactfully, and respectfully.
