Job Summary
Drivers operate heavy‑duty trucks with front, side, or rear‑end load‑lift attachments depending on the line of business and the type of truck. They transport material to disposal, transfer or recycle facilities when trucks reach legal load capacity. Commercial Drivers provide pick‑up service of containers filled with waste or recyclable material, sometimes weighing over 1,000 lbs and requiring maneuvers onto pick‑up stages.
They navigate high‑traffic, congested roadways, driveways, alleys and lots; highly skilled backing maneuvers are essential. Residential Drivers collect household waste or recyclables, safely maneuver vehicles in residential environments, and also navigate congestion. Roll‑off Drivers prepare, load, and transport large mobile open‑top and compactor containers from customer locations, navigating driveways, alleys, lots and high‑traffic roadways, often in tight overhead environments. All Drivers must perform skillful backing maneuvers to successfully perform this job.
- Operate vehicle in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA and DOT requirements, and all applicable laws.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of assigned vehicle and document checks using the standard DVIR.
- Immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Route Manager.
- Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
- Notify Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Notify Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
- Communicate customer requests to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris.
- Follow route assignments as directed and complete end‑of‑day documentation and check‑out process.
- Perform all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
Required Qualifications
- 1 year of operating a vehicle requiring a CDL
- 1 year of equivalent military driving within the last 7 years
- Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located
- Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports
- Successfully complete pre‑employment screening, including drug screen and physical
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with an air‑brake endorsement
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B with an air‑brake endorsement
