Construction Safety Specialist

The Construction Safety Specialist promotes a strong safety culture on construction sites by leading safe work practices, pre-task planning, and continuous improvement in safety performance. This role conducts site safety audits, develops and delivers safety training, and ensures field leadership consistently follows safety procedures and quality standards. The specialist collaborates closely with foremen, superintendents, and field crews to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and recognize outstanding safety performance.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership that emphasizes safe work practices and thorough pre-task planning for all construction activities.
  • Perform regular site safety audits to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors, and take prompt action to correct them.
  • Prescribe and implement corrective actions for safety issues that repeatedly appear in audits, ensuring sustained improvement.
  • Develop, schedule, and deliver targeted training sessions based on recurring audit findings and identified safety gaps.
  • Investigate and evaluate new task-specific safety systems and equipment to enhance worker protection and jobsite safety.
  • Educate crews and superintendents on the proper use and maintenance of new safety systems and equipment.
  • Ensure foremen consistently execute the safety portion of the Operations Plan and comply with established safety procedures.
  • Create, conduct, and document toolbox talks that address relevant safety topics and job-specific hazards.
  • Ensure safety policies, procedures, and quality standards are followed in accordance with the organization's Quality Management System.
  • Maintain a positive and professional work atmosphere by communicating effectively and collaboratively with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
  • Educate foremen on daily work plans and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) procedures and hold them accountable for proper implementation.
  • Attend and actively participate in daily morning huddles with job crews to discuss safety expectations and daily work activities.
  • Attend daily end-of-shift meetings when possible to review safety performance, discuss concerns, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Reward and recognize field personnel who demonstrate outstanding safety initiatives and proactive safety behavior.
  • Research current safety topics, best practices, and emerging issues in the construction industry to keep safety programs current and effective.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, health, or a closely related field.
  • Active OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • Hands-on experience in construction safety, including field-based safety oversight.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
  • Ability to conduct thorough site safety audits and identify unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Skill in developing and delivering safety training and toolbox talks.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively educate and influence foremen, crews, and superintendents.
  • Ability to interpret and support safety policies, procedures, and quality standards within a Quality Management System.
  • Capability to research and evaluate task-specific safety systems and equipment.

Skills & Qualifications
  • OSHA 30, OSHA 500, and OSHA 510 training and certifications.
  • Experience creating and documenting toolbox talks and safety training materials.
  • Familiarity with Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) procedures and daily work planning.
  • Experience recognizing and rewarding positive safety behavior in the field.
  • Ability to stay current with construction industry safety trends, topics, and regulatory changes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport and maintain a positive work atmosphere with field personnel and leadership.
Work Environment

This role operates primarily on active construction sites, working closely with field crews, foremen, and superintendents during daily operations. The Construction Safety Specialist participates in morning huddles and, when possible, end-of-shift meetings, which may require presence early in the day and at the close of shifts. The position involves regular site walks, safety audits, and direct observation of work in progress, often in outdoor or partially enclosed environments with varying weather conditions and typical construction site hazards.

The specialist uses safety equipment and task-specific safety systems, and may demonstrate their proper use to crews. The work environment emphasizes collaboration, open communication, and a positive, safety-focused culture where proactive safety initiatives are encouraged and recognized.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $77000.00 - $85000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
