Overview

The Verona Police Department is now hiring Patrol Officer positions within our uniformed patrol division. This recruitment is open to individuals with no prior law enforcement experience who are interested in beginning a meaningful career in policing.

NOTE:

We offer an accelerated hiring process for experienced law enforcement officers. Applicants currently serving in a similar capacity at another agency may apply by submitting a cover letter and resume directly to the department.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preventative patrol and traffic enforcement
  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls for service
  • Conduct investigations involving criminal matters
  • Perform community‑oriented policing and neighborhood problem‑solving
  • Participate in specialized roles such as K9 unit, drone program, bike patrol, firearms instructor, evidence technician, detective, emergency vehicle operations instructor, defense and arrest tactics instructor, field training officer, community service officer, school resource officer, etc.
Qualifications
  • U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older, high school graduate or equivalent
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and binocular vision correctable to 20/20 (no color blindness)
  • No criminal history significantly related to the duties of a police officer
  • Good physical and mental health; weight reasonably proportionate to height
  • Minimum of 20 fully accredited college credits (and completion of 60 fully accredited credits within five years of hire)
  • Proficient in essential law enforcement duties, police equipment operation, use‑of‑force techniques, and effective verbal and written communication
  • For experienced officers: lateral transfer may receive a starting step based on prior experience; eligibility for accelerated hiring also available
Additional Information
  • Assessment day, strength and agility test, medical examination, character background investigation, psychological examination, and drug testing
  • Probationary period of 18 months
Important Dates to Note
  • Final date to receive applications: Monday, March 30, 2026 at 4:30 PM
  • Assessment Day: April 15 or 16, 2026 (two‑hour sessions, scheduled individually). Successful completion required to advance.
  • Police & Fire Commission (PFC) Interviews: Week of April 27, 2026, evening individual scheduling. Successful completion required to advance.
  • Anticipated Hire Date: July 20 or August 3, 2026 (for non‑certified candidates). Certified officers may begin employment prior to July 20.

  • Insurance: Health insurance via the Wisconsin Group Health Insurance Plan (zero deductible, affordable premiums); dental insurance (employer pays entire cost); life insurance (basic Wisconsin Group Life Insurance Plan); long‑term disability insurance via the Wisconsin Income Continuation Program (no premium).
  • Sick Leave: Earned at 1 day (8 hrs) per month; accrual maximum of 1,160 hours (145 working days).
  • Vacation: 48 hours after 1 year; 96 hours after 2 years; 144 after 6 years; 192 after 10 years; 240 after 15 years.
  • Paid Holidays: 12 days.
  • Education Incentive: 96+ credits earns 6% incentive on base rate; a Bachelor’s degree earns 8%; a graduate degree earns 10%.
  • Pension: City and employee contributions per the Wisconsin Retirement System: 21.9% of gross pay (City 14.7%, Employee 7.2%).
  • Other Programs (at own expense): Two 457 deferred compensation programs; annual pre‑tax flexible spending accounts; group vision insurance; additional Wisconsin Group Life Insurance coverage.
