The Machining Engineer is responsible for developing, analyzing, and continuously improving machining production processes to ensure efficient, high-quality, and cost-effective manufacturing. This role leads process definition, workflow optimization, and technical problem-solving while supporting new product introductions and ongoing production. The Machining Engineer creates and maintains machining control plans and PFMEAs, ensures accurate work instructions and product flow, and collaborates within the Value Stream to implement best-in-class machining methods.
Additionally, this position evaluates cost-reduction opportunities, supports tooling and equipment readiness for new launches, and identifies new machining technologies and equipment to enhance process capability and performance.
- Develop, document, and maintain efficient machining manufacturing processes and procedures.
- Participate in and/or lead planning activities for new or revised products and process launches within Value Stream.
- Participate in contract review for new products to ensure manufacturability and Value Stream alignment.
- Project manage and support the implementation of new machining equipment and technologies to improve manufacturing efficiency.
- Collaborate with Quality and Sales Engineering to ensure products meet customer, quality, and safety requirements.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to improve machining processes, workflow, throughput, and yield.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting machine and process-related issues.
- Evaluate and recommend cost-reduction and process-improvement opportunities to increase efficiency and productivity.
- Mentor and train machining operators on new processes, equipment, and methods.
- Interpret customer specifications, concepts, and blueprints to determine manufacturing feasibility.
- Create internal drawings and define methods of manufacturing for machining operations.
- Develop and maintain machining control plans and PFMEAs.
- Assess operational requirements and plan, organize, and optimize machining workflow patterns.
- Create and execute development and process prove‑in ("green") jobs to support product manufacturability.
- Oversee first production runs to ensure productivity, quality, and performance targets are met.
- Review methods of manufacturing, bills of material (BOMs), and routings to ensure accuracy and alignment with shop floor practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to apply basic principles, theories, and concepts within the mechanical engineering field and general knowledge of other related disciplines.
- Demonstrable natural curiosity and critical thinking.
- Ability to design and apply lean manufacturing concepts.
- Ability to understand and explain processes, schematics, blueprints and/or technical manuals.
- Demonstrated skill in solving highly technical problems.
- Experience with:
- 3 axis and live tooling CNC Turning.
- 3, 4, and 5 axis Vertical and Horizontal Milling.
- Swiss Turning equipped with a LFV option, high pressure coolant and programmable in the B‑axis.
- Boring.
- Broaching.
- Proficient in using computer‑aided design (CAD) software.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
