Description Job Summary

The Distribution Overhead Lineman B is responsible for supporting the safe installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical distribution lines and related equipment. As a mid-level role within the Overhead Distribution Construction and Maintenance team, this position requires a solid foundation in line work and a strong commitment to safety. The ideal candidate will work both independently and as part of a crew while continuing to develop the skills and experience necessary to advance to a Lineman A position.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with constructing, maintaining, and repairing energized and de-energized overhead distribution systems.
  • Climb wood utility poles using proper fall protection and PPE to perform elevated work.
  • Work from aerial devices (bucket trucks) to install or repair power lines and equipment.
  • Make secondary connections at transformers.
  • Pull, sag, and tie in new wire.
  • Assist with setting and replacing utility poles.
  • Perform safe and effective cover-up on energized lines and equipment.
  • Assemble and stage materials for installation by senior linemen.
  • Maintain a clean and safe jobsite; clear work areas as needed.
  • Excavate to support structure or cable installation.
  • Use various manual and powered tools such as wrenches, drills, jackhammers, tampers, etc.
  • Operate hand lines, tie knots, and handle equipment effectively.
  • Work near energized components with proper grounding and safety protocols.
  • Communicate with property owners and the general public regarding work activity.
  • Participate in safety training and perform all duties in accordance with company safety standards.
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisors.
Qualifications and Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in overhead distribution line work.
  • Experience climbing wood poles and working from heights is required.
  • Must be able to work with hands above head for extended periods.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • CDL Class A preferred or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and Pole Top Rescue certification required.
  • Must pass background check, motor vehicle report, and DOT physical.
  • Must pass pre‑employment and ongoing drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be able to wear and use full PPE as required.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Willing to work long hours, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call‑outs.
  • Willing to travel out of state for storm or restoration work as needed.
  • Basic understanding of utility operations, minimum approach distances, and safety procedures.
  • Able to follow instructions and work efficiently with a crew or independently.
  • Strong communication, focus, and attention to detail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of overhead distribution systems and equipment.
  • Proficiency in climbing poles and operating aerial devices.
  • Familiarity with energized line safety, grounding, and cover‑up procedures.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and rigging equipment effectively.
  • Understanding utility safety standards and minimum approach distances.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, and safety protocols.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and schedules.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Outdoor work environment in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to electrical hazards, high noise levels, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent climbing of poles, ladders, and structures.
  • Regular bending, kneeling, standing, stooping, and crawling.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights and in confined spaces.
  • Sufficient hand‑eye coordination to handle small parts and tools.
  • Must be able to wear PPE (rubber gloves, hard hats, harnesses, etc.) for long durations.
  • Visual acuity required to read instruments and work with energized components.
  • Frequent entry and exit from vehicles and bucket trucks.
