Overview

The Maintenance Engineering department is seeking a Maintenance/Project Co-Op to begin Spring '27. This is a support position to the Maintenance / Engineering Departments of Ergon Refining, Inc. The Project Engineer provides technical and engineering support, as needed, for the development, design, and implementation of various projects as directed by the Maintenance & Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

The duties of the Co-op Engineer include, but are not limited to, those outlined in the following job functions. Other responsibilities may be added or substituted if necessary.

  • Develop completed project design specifications from basic conceptual ideas with limited direction
  • Organize, prepare and conduct project review and status presentations with key personnel to further develop and review project details
  • Review project details and equipment with Maintenance personnel (supervision, engineering, technicians) to ensure maintenance interests are addressed
  • Prepare preliminary project estimates and cost justifications and completing Project Approval Forms (PAFs) and other documentation as necessary for management approval of projects
  • Prepare detailed project estimates and cost justifications and developing Authorizations for Expenditure (AFEs) and other documentation as necessary for management approval of projects
  • Prepare and implement project schedules as needed for efficient completion of tasks, utilizing all applicable work groups and resources
  • Monitor progress of all project phases to verify accuracy of schedule and budget estimates
  • Secure coordinating and/or supervising contract consulting, engineering, design, and vendor services for supplemental design assistance as needed to accomplish project goals
  • Specify and procure parts and equipment as needed and verify compatibility with service conditions and applicable design codes
  • Document all phases of project design, construction, and installation to verify compliance with Ergon Refining, Inc. specifications, all applicable design and construction codes, recommended practices, etc.
  • Initiate, participate in, and ensure the completion of the Management of Change Procedure (including Pre-Startup Safety Reviews) for Project Engineering-related activities
  • Provide project follow-up upon completion of installation, including equipment file development/documentation for new and/or affected equipment, recommended preventive maintenance of equipment, acquisition of spare parts, operating procedure development, startup assistance and lessons learned documentation
  • Assist Maintenance / Engineering Department in thoroughly documenting general maintenance shutdowns, projects and lessons learned
  • Assist in development, implementation and maintenance of Engineering and Construction specifications for refinery equipment
  • Assist in the development of engineering project proposals and preparing project cost estimates for annual and quarterly budget reviews
  • Work with Maintenance / Engineering staff to continually develop and improve project and maintenance engineering techniques, policies and procedures
  • Participate in all aspects of miscellaneous project and maintenance engineering as necessary to meet the needs of Maintenance / Engineering department
Position Qualifications
  • Completion of 2 semesters in an accredited engineering program (preferably in civil or mechanical engineering) while maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0, and a commitment to work in this position at a minimum of 3 semesters alternated with school.
  • This requires a self-motivated person with strong leadership, communication, and organization skills.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is recommended.
