Position Summary

The Director of Veterans Success and Military-Connected Student Services provides strategic leadership and oversight for all programs, services, and institutional initiatives supporting student veterans, currently serving military members, and military-connected students at Texas A&M University–Victoria. The Director serves as the University’s principal authority on veteran and military-connected student success, policy, and regulatory compliance, ensuring alignment with federal and state regulations, Texas A&M University System requirements, and institutional priorities.

The Director leads the Office of Veterans Success and is responsible for the planning, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of services that promote access, engagement, retention, and degree completion. While the office currently operates as a single-staff unit, the Director is responsible for long-range planning and for recommending staffing, budget, and resource expansion as institutional demand grows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Planning 25%
  • Provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for veteran and military-connected student services aligned with University goals.
  • Develop, implement, and assess initiatives that support enrollment, retention, persistence, and graduation.
  • Serve as the University’s subject-matter expert on veteran and military-connected student success, advising senior leadership on policy, risk, and best practices.
  • Monitor national trends, legislative changes, and compliance requirements to advance military-friendly practices.
VA Certification, Compliance & Risk Management 25%
  • Serve as the University’s primary School Certifying Official (SCO) for VA educational benefits.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas Veterans Commission, and Texas A&M University System policies.
  • Oversee enrollment certifications, benefit processing, records management, and audit preparation.
  • Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure audit readiness and mitigate institutional risk.
  • Communicate regulatory updates and compliance expectations to campus partners.
Student Success, Transition & Retention 20%
  • Oversee comprehensive support structures that facilitate successful student transition from enrollment through graduation.
  • Lead early-alert, case management, and intervention efforts for veterans and military-connected students at risk of academic failure.
  • Serve on the Behavioral Assessment Team and contribute to institutional risk assessment and response strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with advising, financial aid, counseling, disability services, health services, career services, and academic units to coordinate support.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of on- and off-campus resources related to funding, medical and disability benefits, and community-based support.
Program Development & Campus Engagement 10%
  • Develop, implement, and assess orientations, workshops, programs, and events tailored to military-connected students.
  • Lead campus-wide commemorations and initiatives recognizing military service and sacrifice.
  • Provide training and consultation to faculty and staff on military cultural competency and student support strategies.
  • Encourage, advise and support student veteran organizations and leadership development initiatives.
Resource Management & Office Growth 10%
  • Manage the Office of Veterans Success budget and identify external funding, grants, and partnership opportunities.
  • Analyze enrollment, utilization, and outcome data to recommend staffing, space, and resource expansion.
  • Lead long-term planning to scale services in alignment with institutional growth and demand.
Campus & External Partnerships 5%
  • Represent the University on internal and external committees related to veteran and military-connected student success.
  • Foster relationships with local, regional, state, and national organizations to expand awareness and support for military-connected students.
  • Collaborate with Admissions, Registrar, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and other applicable offices to streamline processes and improve student outcomes.
  • Support military-friendly designations, recognitions, and compliance reporting.
Assessment & Reporting 5%
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and student outcomes using data-informed assessment practices.
  • Analyze enrollment, retention, and graduation trends to inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Prepare reports for senior leadership, accreditation, and Texas A&M University System reporting.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Progressive experience in veteran services, student affairs, or higher education administration, including a minimum of two years of supervisory or leadership experience.
