Job Summary
The Day Surgery Charge Nurse is responsible for overall patient care in the Day Surgery Unit. This involves both preadmission and day of surgery care. This nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care utilizing the age specific nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation. This nurse collects and records patient information including medications and medical/surgical history. This nurse will review pre-operative testing and patient history, and perform physical assessment, reporting abnormal findings and/or patient issues to the physician and/or operating room personnel.
This nurse uses the nursing process to provide patient education regarding pre-operative preparation and instructions, day of surgery processes, and post-operative instructions. This nurse possesses substantial knowledge, judgment and skill based upon the principles of the biological, psychological, behavioral and social sciences.

Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
Required:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Experience:
Required:
At least one (1) year of experience in the care of ambulatory surgery patients or 3-5 years of med/surg experience.
Preferred:
Some management experience
Special
Skills and Abilities:
Required:
Phlebotomy;
Computer – Keying/Typing;
Microsoft Word
Licensure / Certification Requirements:
Required:
Currently registered with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners;
Basic Life Support Certification - BLS
