ResponsibilitiesThe Registered Nurse Preceptor functions as a teacher and mentor in guiding, directing and supervising technical nursing activities of the nurse preceptee. Provides guidance and consultation when needed, regarding effective patient care and scope of practice. Creates formal and informal learning opportunities for peers regarding practice issues, technology and/or current research, identifies and intervenes when staff weaknesses are identified. The Registered Nurse Preceptor is responsible for the oversight of the preceptee in the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
The Registered Nurse is directly responsible for the care given to his/her assigned patients. He/She communicates with the physician, nurse director, coworkers about changes in the patient's clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and abnormal results and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition and/or response to treatment. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
Works collaboratively with patients, patients' family, significant other(s) and hospital staff to achieve goals and outcomes.
Education, Experience, Training:
- Current and valid state Registered Nurse license.
- Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.
- Current ACLS certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
- Current PALS certificate and/or ENPC required 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
- Basic Arrythmia Interpretation within 30 days of hire.
- Minimum of one year experience as a staff nurse RN in an acute care hospital setting, preferred.
- Completion of preceptor class.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Facility Specific Requirements (facility may require items listed below):
- In Paramedic Base Station ED: MICN within 12 months of hire and maintain current.
- EDAP certified facilities:
Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 and 2 within 6 months of hire. - Non-OB facilities: NRP certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) Certification within 12 months of hire required.
