The Preschool or Junior Kindergarter Teacher is a full-time, on-site role located in Vienna, VA, responsible for creating a nurturing, developmentally appropriate classroom grounded in the school’s Christ-centered mission. Day-to-day responsibilities include planning and delivering lessons that support early childhood development, integrating play-based and exploratory learning, and encouraging social, emotional, and spiritual growth. The Preschool Teacher will design and implement age-appropriate activities, monitor student progress, and maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming learning environment.
This role collaborates closely with colleagues and families through regular communication, parent conferences, and participation in school events to support each child’s holistic development. Our Junior Kindergarten program is called The Shire and meets three days a week Tuesday through Thursday from 8:45am to 1:15pm; with an option to add a fourth day on Mondays, depending on the demand and teacher availability.
The school year runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Our Shire program is part of the overall curriculum arc of our entire school. Since students may be in the Shire for two years, we have a two-year curriculum:
Year 1 - God’s Explorers: A-Z Adventures in God’s Word and World and Year 2 - The ABC’s of God’s Character. Students in the Shire are ages 3-5 and must be potty-trained.
- Strong foundation in Early Childhood Education and experience working with preschool or Kindergarten-age children.
- Demonstrated ability in Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development tailored to young learners.
- Effective Communication skills for collaborating with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to a Christ-centered educational philosophy and alignment with the school’s mission and values.
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).
- Ability to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment that supports diverse learning styles.
- Strong classroom management, organizational skills, and reliability in maintaining schedules and routines.
- Teach in a manner consistent with Lorien Wood’s Statement of Faith, Guiding Biblical Principles, and Distinctives as well as the Lorien Wood Faculty Handbook. Teacher shall be knowledgeable of the Distinctives and represent them in the classroom;
- Interact with all members of the Lorien Wood community (students, parents, fellow faculty and staff, Head of School) in a courteous, competent, professional, and reliable manner;
- Provide exemplary and professional care to the students entrusted to Teacher’s charge, with attention given to the individual progress, needs, and abilities of each student; teacher shall carry out ongoing assessments regarding each student’s habits, abilities, attitudes, and behavior while at school;
- Develop and write daily lesson plans and overall curriculum plans consistent with Lorien Wood’s Integral Curriculum model in collaboration with other teachers and with the Head of School; said lesson plans and curricula will be completed in a timely and appropriate manner in preparation for instruction;
