Position: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing- Villa Park

Teacher Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing

Job Goal:
To work with students with hearing disabilities; assisting students and staff so that the students can be successful in the least restrictive setting.

Qualifications:

B.S. required, M.S. preferred. Illinois PEL for hearing impaired, Signed English required, familiarity of ASL preferred. Low incidence experience preferred. Previous teaching experience preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student's performance and probable use of hearing; obtaining updated medical/audiological information and share with parent, teacher, and other appropriate staff
  • Share functional auditory and language information with the mainstream teacher so that the student receives any necessary classroom or acoustic modifications
  • Monitor the condition and use of appropriate amplification equipment for each student
  • Communicate with Consultant and Diagnostic staff as appropriate
  • Develop, as part of a team, an appropriate individualized educational program for each student on the class list, and implement this program
  • Provide instruction to each hearing impaired student on the class list, as appropriate
  • Develop lesson plans for implementing instruction
  • In-service mainstream teachers and other support personnel as appropriate, including suggestions for environmental modifications, as well as suggestions for materials, and use of an interpreter, if needed
  • Make regular contact with parents of students and keep records of contacts, including updating short range objectives and other appropriate records
  • Provide emotional support for students and families to promote understanding and coping skills for children's hearing loss
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of language development and language refinement needed by hearing impaired children
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to communicate effectively and to provide a complete English model for hearing impaired children using a Total Communication approach
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to implement the following specialized areas: auditory training speech and speech reading monitoring amplification use and maintenance of hearing aids use of interpreter total communication
  • Establish open, frequent communication with parents, staff, and related services personnel. Attend staff and professional meetings as requested
  • Appropriately provide and interpret progress and technical data for all personnel and parents at conferences, annual reviews, and staffings
  • Present appropriate and specific information at staff conferences
  • Maintain schedule, be punctual, and meet assigned responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain a positive atmosphere in working with staff in order that this atmosphere may be carried over for the hearing impaired student
  • Use good organizational skills and flexibility to establish appropriate schedules for student and self
  • Maintain up to date skills related to teaching students by attending staff development opportunities
