JOB SUMMARY

The School Resource Officer prevents juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and school personnel; and informs students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prevents juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and school personnel; informs students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens; formulates educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in the schools; and participates in campus activities, student organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible;
  • Assists in preparation of response plans and respond to criminal activity in and around the school; makes presentations to students in conflict resolution, crime awareness and anger management;
  • Patrols Bicycle Maintains through observation and the use of speed detection devices; conducts road closures; detains and tests drivers suspected of driving under the influence;
  • Directs traffic at scene; prepares accident reports;
  • Conducts and prepares investigations of vehicle accidents;
  • Attends/participates in daily roll call including inspection and training prior to going on duty; participates in training programs to improve knowledge and skills;
  • Performs specialized short or long term assignments including administrative, technical and investigative duties as required;
  • Assists the public with various traffic related concerns including: surveying intersections for new traffic control; works with public, civic organizations, etc; in conducting community activities;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified as a Peace Officer through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (Georgia POST), with certification active and in good standing
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License
Special

Qualifications:
  • School Resource Officer (SRO) certification is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of department practices and policies;
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems;
  • Skill in using computers for data entry;
  • Skill in using computers for word processing and accounting purposes; and
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing:
    Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Climbing:
    Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling:
    Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching:
    Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling:
    Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Fingering:
    Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping:
    Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling:
    Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Hearing:
