Job Title

Elementary Special Education Life Skills Aide

Primary Role

The Elementary Life Skills Aide supports students with significant disabilities by assisting with academics, behavior, and daily living needs in a life skills classroom setting. This role provides essential support with toileting, hygiene, and personal care while also helping students with meals, sensory activities, and routines. Under the direction of the Special Education Teacher, the aide implements instructional and behavioral strategies, monitors progress, and ensures safe transitions.

By combining compassion, professionalism, and consistency, the Life Skills Aide helps students develop independence, achieve IEP goals, and thrive in a supportive school environment.

Job Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to students in life skills classrooms, assisting with academic, social, behavioral, and daily living tasks.
  • Assist with toileting, hygiene, and personal care needs in a respectful and safe manner.
  • Monitor and support students during meals, sensory breaks, and other daily routines.
  • Implement instructional activities and behavior support strategies under the direction of the Special Education Teacher.
  • Collect data and assist in progress monitoring of student IEP goals.
  • Supervise students during transitions, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned times to ensure safety and consistency.
  • Provide classroom coverage as needed.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Work closely with Special Education Teachers, therapists, and other staff to support student progress and independence.
  • Communicate regularly with supervising teachers about student needs, progress, and concerns.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to promote engagement, confidence, and self-regulation.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and staff to support inclusion and accommodations when appropriate.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Follow health, safety, and dignity standards in assisting with toileting and personal care.
  • Demonstrate patience, professionalism, and integrity in working with students, staff, and families.
  • Engage in professional development related to special education, life skills support, and behavior management strategies.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  • Experience with students with disabilities preferred
Physical Demands

Other Duties

Perform other related duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the elementary school building and the individualized learning experiences for elementary students with disabilities in the Life Skills program during contracted hours.
