Description

The Assistant Professor of English and Assistant Writing Center Director is a 9‑month, full‑time position that teaches courses, advises students, and supports the continued operations and development of the English program and University Writing Center. As Assistant Professor, this individual will teach one composition‑based college course per semester as well as provide personalized learning support, both in academic writing and for students developing general academic success skills, including time management, organization, and self‑efficacy.

As the Assistant Director of the Writing Center, this individual will oversee the operations of the University Writing Center, including scheduling and other administrative duties to ensure the Writing Center maintains its stated hours of operation.

Responsibilities

Provide academic instruction in the University's English Department.

Develop syllabi for courses and ensure course content meets English Department standards and accreditation requirements.

Use a variety of proven methods of engagement and assessment that facilitate student mastery of course content.

Provide students with constructive and corrective feedback.

Evaluate student learning by creating and applying course competencies and accurately evaluating student progress.

Assist with student advising.

Provide scheduled office hours for student consultation.

Utilize Blackboard for assignments, announcements, grades, and feedback.

Serve on departmental and University‑wide committees.

Participate in recruitment and retention activities.

Participate in English program and co‑curricular assessment.

Manage the day‑to‑day operations of the University Writing Center, including scheduling, overseeing the facility, and managing the center's budget.

Work with the English Department faculty to implement the strategic vision for the University Writing Center of student‑centered services and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

A Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or Writing Studies or a Master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the graduate level in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or Writing Studies coursework.

Tutoring experience with writing students.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to foster a positive learning environment for students.

Commitment and desire to go above and beyond to serve our diverse community.

Preferred Skills and Experience for Consideration

Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or Writing Studies or with coursework in composition or writing center pedagogy.

Demonstrated experience teaching composition, especially developmental and/or first‑year at the community college level.

Tutoring experience in a university writing center, including face‑to‑face and online tutoring experience.

Experience managing budgets, making schedules, and maintaining the administrative elements of a program.

Experience using Banner, Blackboard LMS, Simple Syllabus, and Degree Works.
