Primary Function

The Assistant Director of Parent, Family, and Student Activities has a multifaceted role focused on the operation of the Parent and Family Services and Student Activities department. Their responsibilities include interacting with various stakeholders such as students, parents, families, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Director’s role encompasses overseeing departmental operations, interacting with a diverse group of stakeholders, organizing campus activities, promoting student leadership, collaborating with students, and ensuring parents and families are informed and engaged in the university experience.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Maintain Parent and Family Services “brand voice” on social media, Facebook page
  • Organize and present at Parent and Family Orientations (Falland Spring)
  • Be a resource for parents and families regarding VU news, important updates, and events taking place on campus.
  • Provide students with the resources they need to navigate life as a VU student
  • Maintain the Parent and Family website
  • Create and disburse a quarterly newsletter for Parents and Families
  • Actively communicate with faculty and staff regarding the needs of students
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff about ways to engage students, parents, and families
  • Respond to parent and family correspondences within 48 business hours (emails, keep learning, facebook)
  • Use parent email, and social media as a way to educate, and engage students, parents, and families
  • Co-advise and manage the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Student Government Association (SGA).
  • Assist in coordinating the student election process and developing and implementing appropriate training for CAB and SGA
  • Assist in the application process, hiring, training, and supervising of Student Ambassadors
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of annual campus events including Welcome Weekend, Parent/Family Weekend, Homecoming, Spring Fling Week, Orientations, Commencements, and more
  • Promote student membership, support existing clubs, and assist in the formation of new student organizations by planning and coordinating the Club and Organization Fairs, Club and Organization Welcome Dinner, and annual registration and recognition process
  • Serve on division or campus committees
  • Participate in professional development opportunities
  • Be a positive, encouraging resource for parents, families, and students
  • Provide information, presentations, and resources at all StartVU Programs
  • Be a resource and available on all move-in days
  • Be present at all Student Affairs meetings and one-on-one supervisor meetings
  • Build cohesive relationships with the Student Affairs team and the Academic Affairs Team
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective problem solver, ability to make sound judgments and decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, Google suites, Zoom, and a high degree of comfort learning new technology.
  • Proficient with social media platforms, especially Facebook
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
Education, Experience, Licensure
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s level degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year relevant and related experience
Physical Demands

Normal physical demands for successful work in a normal office environment. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to utilize hands for general office work including typing, filing, answering telephones, writing.
