Role:
The Glass-to-Metal Seal Operator is responsible for performing glass working and production operations used in the manufacture of glass-to-metal components and assemblies. This position requires an understanding of basic glass working principles, including the effects of temperature on glass, proper heating and cooling techniques, glass characteristics, and the ability to recognize conditions that may affect product quality.

The Glass-to-Metal Operator operates production and glass working equipment, performs setup and basic adjustments, handles materials and components, and inspects finished and in-process parts to ensure compliance with established specifications. The position works in a hands-on manufacturing environment involving hot glass, open flames and/or heating equipment, hot surfaces, machinery, and elevated temperatures.

Essential Job Functions:

Glass-to-Metal Seal Production
  • Perform glass-to-metal manufacturing and assembly operations according to work instructions, drawings, specifications, and established processes.
  • Heat, form, seal, join, or otherwise process glass and metal components using appropriate production equipment and techniques.
  • Understand and apply basic principles of glass behavior at various temperatures, including softening, heating, cooling, and annealing considerations.
  • Recognize differences in glass characteristics and how temperature, handling, and processing conditions can affect the finished product.
  • Properly control heating and cooling of glass components to minimize cracking, distortion, stress, or other defects.
  • Handle hot glass and components safely using appropriate tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment.
  • Load, unload, position, and manipulate parts and materials during production operations.
  • Follow established process parameters, including temperatures, cycle times, equipment settings, and other manufacturing requirements.
  • Work with Kovar, Tungsten, and Sylvania 4 Stainless metal pins, leads or other metal components.
Machine & Equipment Operation
  • Set up and operate basic manufacturing, glass working, heating, and assembly equipment.
  • Perform routine machine adjustments within established operating parameters.
  • Monitor equipment during operation and recognize abnormal machine or process conditions.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance, cleaning, and care of assigned equipment and work areas.
  • Notify supervision or maintenance of equipment malfunctions or conditions requiring repair.
  • Properly use hand tools, fixtures, gauges, torches, and other production equipment required for assigned operations.
  • Quality and Inspection
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections of in-process and finished parts.
  • Identify common glass and manufacturing defects, including cracks, chips, distortion, contamination, improper seals, dimensional issues, and other nonconforming conditions.
  • Use basic measuring and inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, fixtures, or other inspection tools as required.
  • Compare completed parts to drawings, specifications, samples, and established quality standards.
  • Separate and properly identify nonconforming parts.
  • Accurately document production quantities, scrap, inspection results, process information, and other required manufacturing records.
