Job Description

JOB TITLE: SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

To transport pupils in a safe and efficient manner and perform all activities related to the operation of the school bus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Substitute School Bus shall:

  • Hold and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License, with “S”, Passenger, and Air Brake Endorsements, with no serious violations.
  • Have a minimum of three years' previous safe driving experience.
  • Have sufficient mechanical aptitude to diagnose minor problems and make appropriate repairs.
  • Have the ability to maintain passenger discipline to ensure their safety and well-being and protect against vandalism.
  • Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education, or, during the initial six month period provide a sworn statement that there have not been any convictions of a crime or a disorderly persons offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
  • Provide information that includes current/former employers within the last twenty (20) years in which the employment involved direct contact with children; a written authorization that consents to current and former employers disclosing certain information; and a written statement as to whether the applicant has any employment history regarding child abuse and/or sexual misconduct in accordance with N.J.S.A.18A:6-7.6.
  • Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Provide a Department of Transportation physical by a State Certified Physician.
  • Pass the State required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY

  • District Application and resume.
  • Required documentation outlined in the qualifications above.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

  • Employment year as determined by the Board.
  • Hourly salary as annually set by the Board.
  • Conditions established by all laws and codes of the State and all policies, rules, and regulations established by the Board of Education (N.J.S.A. 18A:27-4 et seq.).

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts a pre-trip safety inspection of the bus prior to every trip and completes the School Bus Condition Report.
  • Notifies SBA of any mechanical malfunctions and/or safety hazards.
  • Adheres to established routes, designated bus stops and keeps to assigned time schedule.
  • Transports only authorized pupils.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory school bus safety regulations.
  • Maintains discipline on the bus and reports violations to the building principal or other authorized individual.
  • Reports all accidents and pupil injuries and completes required reports.
  • Participates in emergency evacuation drills in accordance with board policy, and instructs passengers regarding safety regulations and other bus rules.
  • Performs interior bus cleaning duties daily, cleans windows and exterior as needed.
  • Perform light maintenance as necessary. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by their supervisor, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
