Class Summary

Performs routine clerical work involving related office tasks of a standardized nature.

Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities

Individual will perform responsible clerical work involving related office tasks of a varied nature. Organize, sort, verify and scan documents into Laserfiche; run and filter reports; coordinate workflow and filing system for active and inactive files; complete database management; complete records management for the storage and destructions of files; operates standard office machines and equipment. Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.

Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Performance Standards

Effectively coordinates and performs all duties, scan documents, cordially receives telephone inquiries; clearly communicates information; accurately files correspondence, maintains records.

Minimum Qualifications

High school or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above and associated with such positions as receptionist, office clerk, or office assistant.

Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

Special Requirements

All appointees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

  • Skill in operating standard office machinery and Sheriff’s Office standard software applications.
  • Skill in filing and retrieving information.

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring incumbent to sit or stand for extended periods of time throughout the workday.
  • Ability to perform basic data entry or maintain handwritten records for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to hear at a conversational level.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other appointees and the general public both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate work pace, focus on routine tasks without distraction and complete assigned task within expected time frame.
  • Ability to perform routine tasks that vary little from day to day.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, supervisor(s), and co-workers.
  • Ability to carry out procedures or decisions requiring little independent judgment.
  • Ability to remember basic procedures or steps and recall them to carry out routine tasks.
