Position: Half Day Pre-K Lead Teacher (Part Time)

Overview

Position:
Half Day Pre-K Lead Teacher (mixed age 3/4/5)

Salary: $18-$20 per hour, depending on education and experience

Status:
Hiring for the  school year. Orientation, training and shadowing to begin in June 2026. Half-day teacher to work in full-day Pre-K during the summer to receive additional training within our program.

Hours:

Part-time, non-exempt, Monday–Friday, 8:15 AM – 12:45 PM; possibility of additional hours with after-care position (2:30 PM – 6:00 PM). Holidays, nights and weekends off.*

Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Regional Office in Virginia Beach

Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for Pre-K students; create an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social and emotional development.
  • Supervise students in various school settings; monitor and evaluate student outcomes.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and the community.
  • Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students; maintain records and follow required procedures.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Support program goals within the Five Star Kids Pre-K Program and work under the direction of the Child & Youth Program Director and the Pre-K Manager.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and meet one of the following:
    • Preferred: A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in early childhood education, school-age care, child development, social work, nursing, sociology, psychology, human development and family studies, or another child-related field;
    • OR An associate’s degree in early childhood education or related field with one year of teaching experience;
    • OR A national competency-based credential such as the CCP or CDA (or at least 12 ECE credits) and two years of teaching experience.
  • Leadership training documented if in a supervisory role.
Additional Requisites
  • Complete background check and comply with Virginia Department of Social Services licensing requirements.
  • Strong understanding of teaching and learning processes; knowledge of curriculum and instruction aligned with ASYMCA policies.
  • Ability to provide instruction reflecting multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to work with administrators, colleagues, parents and community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • CPR, First Aid, Daily Health Observations and MAT training required (may be obtained within 30 days of employment).
  • Complete required annual professional development trainings; basic technology skills (Outlook, Word, Excel); valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of military lifestyle and community social services (a plus).
  • Physical requirements:

    standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 55 pounds, climbing, and outdoor activity at least 60 minutes daily.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure the Five Star Kids Pre-K Program meets or exceeds state operations, safety and licensing standards.
  • Develop developmentally appropriate lesson plans and activities; submit for review one week prior to implementation.
  • Adhere to policies in parent/guardian and employee handbooks; plan to attend events as needed to promote programs.
  • Plan a program of study that meets students’ needs, interests and abilities; instruct assigned class at designated times and locations.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes student involvement and achievement of learning objectives; prepare and document lesson plans and assessments.
  • Establish clear learning objectives and align assessments (e.g., PALS, VKRP, ASQ) as required.
  • Maintain safety, records, and compliance with ASYMCA policies; communicate with families and administrators; coordinate with teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Log hours daily and participate in staff meetings; dress professionally and represent ASYMCA.
  • Support accreditation activities and perform other duties as required.
