General Responsibilities
Under the direction of the school principal and supported by the AVID District Directors (Director, Student Services and the Coordinator of Military-Connected and Academic Support Programs), the position is responsible for providing instruction at multiple grade levels to all AVID Elective students. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to implement lessons framed around the features of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) note‑taking, and study skills.
They must be able to facilitate whole‑group, small‑group, and independent instruction. The AVID instructor must exhibit leadership skills and the capacity to collaborate with stakeholders to support the development of all learners.
- On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
- Establishes and maintains high expectations for AVID students' achievement.
- Creates a classroom environment that encourages student involvement in the learning process.
- Prepares for classes and provides written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate superior.
- Utilizes the AVID Curriculum (Weeks at a Glance) to establish objectives for lessons, units, and projects, in line with student needs, the VBCPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, VBCPS policy, and administrative regulation.
- Takes necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Collects and analyzes AVID student data and regularly monitors academic progress to advocate for students’ access to and success in rigorous courses.
- Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community reflecting recognition and respect for every individual.
- Collaborates with feeder schools, AVID students, teachers, parents, building coordinators, AVID administration, and the District Director to develop an AVID recruitment and retention plan based on the college and career readiness framework.
- Provides availability to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
- Models and promotes the use of WICOR instructional strategies across content areas.
- Coaches AVID tutors to implement the ten steps of the AVID tutorial process effectively.
- Assists the administration in implementing policies governing student life and conduct and, in the classroom, develops reasonable rules of behavior and procedure, maintaining order fairly and justly.
- Evaluates one’s own effectiveness, applying acquired skills to increase effectiveness, and strives to improve professional competence.
- Participates in school management, sharing responsibility for the total school program.
- Collaborates with the AVID site coordinator, principal, and district director on implementing AVID Systems to support professional learning and opportunity knowledge.
- Attends all required AVID training and meetings as an active AVID Site Team Member.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge of the VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating the AVID Curriculum (Weeks at a Glance), VBCPS policies, and effective instructional practices; a thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; comprehensive knowledge of AVID standards and instructional methods for integrating Writing, Inquiry, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) best practices; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into the curriculum;
ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school‑based staff, students, parents, and community. Must possess excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.…
