The Bachelor of Science in environmental public health is aproposed new major within the public health program set to launchin fall 2028. Public health is an interdisciplinary program that offers undergraduates a well-rounded education integrating thesocial and natural sciences to champion health equity withinpopulation health. The program highly values experiential learning,and students regularly engage in health-related activism,internships, study-abroad, and other experiential-learning experiences. A key responsibility for the position will be todevelop the curriculum and envision the design of the environmentalpublic health major with support from colleagues across publichealth, biology, environmental science/studies, andchemistry.
The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses peryear. The successful candidate will be committed to teachingexcellence at a liberal arts institution. They will also have the opportunity to develop upper-level courses in their area ofspecialization and will teach in the core curriculum (Hollins’general education program). Additional duties include service tothe department and university, mentorship, academic advising,supervision of undergraduate capstone projects and internships, and faculty governance.
Candidates for this position will have a doctoral degree (Ph.D.,Dr.PH., or equivalent) in environmental health, occupational healthand safety, industrial hygiene, public health, or closely related fields like chemistry, biology, or environmental science, in handby July 1, 2027.
The successful candidate will be able to teach introduction to environmental health, environmental health hazards, toxicology,risk management, and air or water quality. Candidates are expected to maintain an active research agenda in one of the aforementionedareas that engages undergraduates within the framework of a small,teaching-focused, liberal arts institution, along with awillingness to work with a variety of undergraduate students inpursuit of their career goals.
Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience in developing relationships and establishing external collaborations with industrial and community partners.
