Project Highway Engineer – Virginia Beach, VA
Salary: $110,000 – $140,000 (higher based on experience)
Location: Virginia Beach, VA

Must-Have Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (required)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
- 5–10 years of transportation/highway engineering experience
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Micro Station Open Roads Designer
- Strong roadway design experience including geometry, drainage, and utilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Position OverviewThe Transportation team is seeking an experienced Project Highway Engineer to support the planning and design of roadway and multimodal infrastructure projects. This role involves both conceptual and final design work and offers the opportunity to mentor junior staff while managing multiple concurrent assignments.
Key Responsibilities- Perform highway engineering, stormwater management, and drainage design
- Develop conceptual and final roadway, highway, and multimodal designs
- Prepare geometric horizontal and vertical alignments
- Complete grading, drainage, and utility layouts
- Prepare and review design criteria, calculations, plans, estimates, and specifications
- Develop 3D roadway models for conceptual alignments
- Create temporary traffic control plans
- Conduct constructability reviews
- Develop typical sections and pavement designs
- Prepare right-of-way and easement plans
- Support cost estimating and technical report writing
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in teams
- Comfortable mentoring junior staff
- Effective in both office and field environments
- Strong technical and computer skills
- Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
- Familiarity with VDOT and LAP project development processes
