Geotechnical Engineer

ICE is actively seeking a self‑motivated Geotechnical Engineer to join the Geotechnical Engineering Team in Virginia Beach, VA to support heavy civil construction and transportation projects throughout the Southeast. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and be trained and primarily responsible for a variety of geotechnical projects including pile testing, movement monitoring, and instrumentation on infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of field foundation and geotechnical testing, analyze collected data, and provide timely reporting of test results under the supervision of a professional engineer.
  • Primarily work in Virginia, and occasionally on projects across the Southeast (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama).
  • Collaborate with the geotechnical group and assist with engineering tasks as needed under the supervision of the senior engineer.
  • Maintain organized documentation and archives of plans, files, drawings, and construction submittals.
  • Foster proactive communication with the geotechnical group, other disciplines, clients, and subconsultants.
  • Demonstrate an eagerness to learn, contribute, and grow in the geotechnical engineering field.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field with a Geotechnical concentration (preferred).
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification (required).
  • 1–3 years of geotechnical experience desired.
  • Willingness to learn about job costs, scheduling, safety, and construction concepts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Physical Demands
  • Required to lift up to 60 pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Requires hand‑eye coordination for computer data entry, monitoring and instrumentation equipment, and pile testing equipment.
  • Ability to travel and visit work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures year‑round.
Travel or Environment Requirements
  • Company vehicle will be provided for field work and supply procurement.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time to projects located in the Southeast.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Adaptability to interruptions and changes.
  • Comfortable with extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and working in hot, cold, and noisy environments.
Expected Hours of Work
  • Full‑time position (40 hours per week).
  • Standard work schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
  • Some night and weekend work may be required for sensitive projects.
