Position: Principal Structural Engineer (Water/ Wastewater)

Role Description

Arcadis is searching for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our growing Resilience Water Team in Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Washington D.C., or Georgia. The Senior Structural Engineer, with the support of a strong nationally recognized technical staff, will utilize their expertise and technical knowledge of structural design and construction engineering to successfully execute projects within the Municipal & Industrial Water/Wastewater and Water Resources infrastructure design & construction engineering consulting markets.

Accountabilities
  • Mentor entry‑level and junior structural engineering staff.
  • Organize and conduct structural related engineering investigations, calculations, and planning work with a well‑defined scope.
  • Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions and regulatory agency specifications.
  • Lead the development of calculations, plans, specifications, requests for proposals, and other contract documents.
  • Work directly with a variety of engineering disciplines, office / project staff, client and sub‑contractors throughout the project life cycle, and therefore should have clear and concise oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to coordinate meetings, conduct effective client presentations and prepare written reports.
  • Exercise own judgment on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.
  • Manage the production of engineering and construction drawings, specifications, bid packages, and cost estimates for projects.
  • Function as an Engineer of Record, Task Manager or Project Engineer on projects to manage related budgets and schedules, lead deliverables, and develop and manage plans, permit checklists, scopes of work and facilitate coordination for timely completion and submission of projects.

Some travel may be required for project site visits, client meetings, general planning purposes or to oversee construction activities, depending on project staffing needs.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications
  • 10 years of structural engineering experience in Water / Wastewater.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Structural or Civil/Structural.
Key Attributes

The ideal candidate should possess strong structural analysis and design skills, demonstrating proficiency in tools such as STAAD Pro and other structural software applications. Excellent technical writing and editing abilities are required to effectively communicate complex engineering concepts and project requirements. Experience in preparing, reviewing, and approving project drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates is crucial. Proficiency in utilizing AutoCAD/REVIT software is also essential.

The candidate should have an excellent working knowledge of building codes and standards, including IBC, ACI and other relevant industry codes.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, at least 15 years of practical involvement in the Water/Wastewater sector, a Professional Engineer (PE) License across a range of states, and, if available, a Structural Engineer (SE) License or NCEES record with MLSE. Experience with the NCEES 16‑Hour structural exam and proficiency in MATHCAD are also highly desirable.
