Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is a full‑service transportation design and consulting firm that provides innovative solutions to transportation challenges. We are seeking a self‑motivated Geotechnical Staff Technician to join our team in Virginia Beach.

Position SummaryThe Geotechnical Staff Technician will work under the guidance of the Geotechnical Engineer and be responsible for geotechnical analyses and designs for infrastructure projects including roadways, bridges, retaining walls, soils, asphalt, pavement, and rock slopes. Responsibilities include developing subsurface investigation and laboratory testing plans, reviewing boring logs and laboratory data, assisting with design plans for a variety of projects, and performing structural design using AASHTO and applicable specifications.
PositionResponsibilities
- Perform a variety of field foundation and geotechnical testing, analyze collected data, and report results under the supervision of the Geotechnical Testing Manager.
- Work primarily in Virginia, with projects across the Southeast including NC, GA, SC, LA, MS, FL, and AL.
- Assist with geotechnical design as needed under the supervision of the senior engineer.
- Maintain organized documentation of design files, drawings, and construction submittals.
- Communicate proactively with the Geotech group, other disciplines, clients, and subconsultants.
- Provide construction assistance and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) as necessary.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field with a Geotechnical concentration required.
- Master of Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical concentration preferred.
- EIT desired; EITs will be assigned as Geotechnical Designer until obtaining a PE.
- A minimum of one year of geotechnical experience preferred.
- Experience using Micro Station and common geotechnical engineering software.
- Knowledge of job cost, scheduling, safety, and construction concepts.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States and have a safe driving record.
- Dependable transportation to attend meetings or make field visits on short notice.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time to projects in the Southeast.
- Capacity to observe and differentiate details and colors of objects.
- Ability to recognize sound, tone, and pitch; speak and write clearly and effectively.

For positions involving field work, completion of OSHA 10 certification is required as a condition of employment. New hires without current certification must complete the training within two weeks of hire. ICE will provide the training and cover associated costs.
Physical DemandsThe role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. The position requires the ability to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are essential. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, the capacity to sit for extended periods, and ability to work in varied environmental conditions including hot, cold, and noisy settings.
Night work, weekend work, and work in active traffic may also occur depending on the project scope.
The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The work schedule will vary according to the project schedule and may include night work and weekend work as required.
