Hiring Range: $52,000 - $71,000

(Higher compensation may be considered based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity)

Reporting to the Loan Underwriting Manager, the Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and approving loan applications in alignment with established credit union policies, regulatory standards, and risk appetite. This role supports high-quality credit decisions, ensures regulatory compliance, and contributes to a seamless, member-centric lending experience.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate consumer loan applications to determine creditworthiness and ensure compliance with internal lending policies and all applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Make timely, accurate underwriting decisions aligned with credit union risk strategies and service goals.
  • Maintain data accuracy and integrity across loan origination systems and credit decision tools.
  • Ensure underwriting supports a seamless, member-friendly borrowing experience while preserving portfolio quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to enhance underwriting accuracy and consistency, including providing second-look reviews and mentorship to colleagues.
  • Monitor and manage loan delinquency rates within established thresholds to ensure sound portfolio performance.
  • Communicate decisions and feedback clearly and respectfully with team members and partners to foster transparency and accountability.
  • Promote a service-driven, collaborative culture by building strong cross-functional relationships and contributing to shared team goals in a hybrid work environment.
  • Identify cross-sell opportunities within loan applications to support loan growth and deepen member engagement.
  • Support internal audits and external regulatory reviews, including follow-up on findings and contributions to process improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and lending industry trends to support ongoing risk management and personal development.
  • Deliver training for new team members and provide ongoing coaching on loan policy, underwriting best practices, financial education, and regulatory updates.
  • Participate in projects aimed at improving the underwriting process and supporting strategic business objectives.
  • Use fraud detection tools and analytical techniques to identify potential fraudulent activity in loan applications and financial transactions
Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities
  • Strong credit evaluation and analytical skills, with deep knowledge of consumer lending practices, complex tax return analysis, and sound judgment in balancing risk management with member service.
  • High attention to detail in reviewing loan documentation to ensure accuracy, maintain data integrity, and uphold compliance with lending policies and regulatory standards.
  • Thorough understanding of federal and state lending regulations, and ability to apply that knowledge to real-time decisions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; capable of clearly articulating credit decisions and collaborating across internal teams and external partners.
  • Comfortable adapting to evolving credit policies, lending criteria, and dynamic risk environments.
  • Member-first orientation with a commitment to service excellence and compliance.
  • Proven ability to mentor peers and contribute collaboratively to team success in both remote and in-person environments.
  • Self-motivated and reliable, able to manage workload and meet performance targets in a fast-paced setting.
