Job Summary:The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a highly skilled System Engineer to design, implement, secure, and maintain the city’s enterprise infrastructure. This role ensures the reliability, performance, and scalability of systems that support critical municipal operations and public-service delivery. The System Engineer will work closely with IT teams, vendors, and city departments to support infrastructure modernization, cloud adoption, and long‑term technology planning.

Responsibilities:- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise systems, servers, storage, and virtualization environments.
- Manage system performance, capacity planning, and lifecycle management to ensure high availability.
- Configure and support Windows/Linux servers, cloud services, and hybrid infrastructure components.
- Maintain system monitoring, alerting, and performance-optimization tools.
- Implement and maintain security controls, patching, and hardening standards in alignment with city cybersecurity policies.
- Support disaster recovery planning, backup strategies, and business continuity operations.
- Ensure systems comply with municipal, state, and federal security and data‑protection requirements.
- Conduct vulnerability remediation and collaborate with cybersecurity teams on risk mitigation.
- Integrate enterprise systems with applications, databases, and cloud platforms.
- Troubleshoot complex system issues and coordinate resolution with internal teams and vendors.
- Support automation initiatives, scripting, and configuration management to improve operational efficiency.
- Provide Tier III technical support for escalated infrastructure issues.
- Participate in planning and execution of infrastructure modernization, cloud migration, and digital transformation initiatives.
- Work with city departments to understand operational needs and translate them into technical solutions.
- Prepare technical documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
- Contribute to technology roadmaps and long‑term infrastructure strategy.
- Must be a US citizen.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, OR 6 or more years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- 3–5+ years of experience in system engineering, infrastructure administration, or enterprise IT operations.
- Proficiency with Windows and/or Linux server environments, virtualization platforms, and system monitoring tools
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or similar) and hybrid infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, security principles, and system integration.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Successful background and drug screening check.
- Experience working in local government or public‑sector IT environments.
- Knowledge of municipal systems, public‑safety infrastructure, or enterprise platforms.
- Experience with automation tools (Power Shell, Python, Ansible, etc.).
- Certifications such as Microsoft (Azure/Server), VMware, CompTIA (Security+, Network+), or similar.
- Experience supporting modernization, cloud migration, or large‑scale infrastructure upgrades.
