General Responsibilities

Performs intermediate level custodial work in maintaining the cleanliness of school buildings and surrounding grounds. An employee in this position receives classroom and hands‑on training in the use of cleaning tools, equipment and supplies, and safety and personal protection necessary to perform custodial work. Supervises other custodial staff members.

Essential Tasks

• May serve as the head night custodian in an elementary school.
• Secure building; take out the trash, clean bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, and the gym.
• Mop and buff the halls.
• Clean the cafeteria after the school activities.
• Change lights; fill all the paper towel dispensers and toilet paper dispensers.
• Clean and dust high and low, clean the chalkboards and trays, wipe clean the desks, empty trashcans.
• Clean all the bathroom stalls and sinks, fill toilet paper and soap dispensers, sweep and mop the floors, wipe the walls.
• Sweep, mop, buff, strip and wipe all the walls.
• Clean gym, sweep and spot mop, clean water fountains, and clean up after activities.
• Occasionally supervise Custodian I's.
• Set up and pick up chairs, clean, sweep and pick up all trash.
• Replace lights on a daily basis for inside and outside of the school building.
• Assist when other staff members are out.
• Perform related work as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Must have a knowledge of effective cleaning techniques and routine preventive maintenance; knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies, equipment, building fixtures and equipment. Ability to learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment as they are upgraded; ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, train and provide work direction to others in a manner that fosters high morale and performance.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators and staff. Must be capable of responding to emergencies and working in inclement weather as needed. Ability to rotate between day and night shifts as directed.

Education and Experience
Required: GED or some high school Preferred: High School Diploma; custodial experience; experience leading custodians in a school setting.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Physical Requirements

Use of sensory skills to communicate and interact with others; frequent walking, standing, bending, grasping, repetitive motion, and reaching; occasional stooping, balancing, crouching, kneeling, and fingering. Work involves moderate exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, extreme vibrations, hazards such as electric current, exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and loud noises. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely.

Compensation & Benefits
