Job Duties and
Preferred Qualifications:
The Virginia Beach Police Public Affairs Office is looking to fill the position of Media and Communications Coordinator II (a.k.a. Social Media Specialist).In this role, the MCCII (Social Media Specialist) will assist with the media relations load by working with assigned City departments to develop/implement public relations, marketing and media relations strategies and materials for addressing issues, promoting programs/services/events, and communicating with the public.
Responsibilities of the Media and Communications Coordinator II (Social Media Specialist) include:
Content Management:
Create, schedule, and oversee daily posts across approved social media platforms (such as Facebook and X/Twitter)
Crisis Communications:
Monitor and rapidly disseminate critical public safety alerts, emergency updates, and traffic advisories in coordination with the Public Information Officer (PIO).Website Integration:
Ensure all social media posts link back to official city web assets, newsrooms, or contact forms whenever possible.
Media Liaison:
Collaborate with local media partners and internal department stakeholders to align messaging and amplify community outreach.
Multimedia Production:
Produce engaging digital media content, including graphics, short-form video, and photos tailored to law enforcement transparency and recruitment goals.
Community Engagement:
Monitor comments and direct messages professionally, escalating community concerns or tips to appropriate command staff or investigative units.
Analytics & Reporting:
Track engagement metrics, audience growth, and sentiment analysis to optimize future public awareness campaigns.
Additional Hours of Operation:
Work during emergencies, disasters, and inclement weather on Alpha One status to provide accurate and timely information to the news media.
Additional Duties:
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on current workloads and department needs.
