Senior Quality Engineer
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer to support operations at our shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
The Senior Quality Engineer is responsible for problem analysis, surveillance activities, and new process development (including procedures, Process Control Plans (PCPs), test results, and training requirements). This role also conducts internal and external audits of the Quality Management System and supports continuous improvement initiatives.
Job Description:
- Develop PCPs and other required processes to meet contract and customer requirements.
- Review for accuracy, Test and Inspection Plans, Required Report Lists, and/or subcontractor quality documents to meet contract requirements.
- Create and update Quality Processes as required.
- Investigate and respond to customer complaints and discrepancies through the Corrective Action Program.
- Investigate problems that arise during production to formulate resolutions with all parties.
- Create Quality Engineering reports to include quality metrics. Analyze quality metrics to identify trends, improve production efficiency, and reduce costly rework.
- Suggest and evaluate alternative methods and procedures to resolve problems.
- Serve as a liaison with customers on quality and corrective action related issues.
- Perform internal and external audits as required.
- Coordinate and manage the Corrective Action Program, the Non-Conforming Product Program, and other quality programs as assigned; provide statistical data to meet quality objectives and contract requirements.
- Investigate non-conformances, compile objective evidence, and lead root-cause analyses to ensure timely closures of Corrective Actions.
- Provide problem solving and analysis to determine underlying issues with non-conforming items.
- Develop, document, and audit practices, program quality metrics, and reporting systems.
- Provide quality surveillance of various services performed throughout the enterprise.
- Review and approve quality requirements for manufacturing planning, supplier purchase orders, and engineering specifications to ensure contract compliance.
- Provide additional quality services or perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Must have a bachelor's degree in an Engineering, Quality, or Management field (or equivalent work experience), with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, manufacturing, relevant engineering services, or other similar technical fields, including at least five (5) years in quality, risk, or other related role.
- Must have knowledge of quality techniques and systems, including quality specifications and advanced quality systems.
- Must be familiar with shipyard environments, repair availabilities, and newbuild construction.
- Must be able to identify effective root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures using disciplined problem-solving methods and statistical analysis.
- Must have knowledge of ISO standards, NAVSEA Standard Items, ABS requirements, USCG requirements, ASME requirements, and various quality and statistical techniques.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication, and writing skills. Strong analytical, mathematical, and interpersonal skills to collaborate with production teams and external stakeholders.
- Must be open minded collaborative skills to work with the other areas of the company to include production, project/program management, finance, subcontracts, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Must have relevant Department of Defense experience, including direct experience working with government customers.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government installations (DBIDS), as required.
Qualifications:
- NDT and/or welding certification or related knowledge preferred.
- Six Sigma, ASQ certifications, or auditor training (ISO 9001) is highly advantageous.
- Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
- General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time.
- Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc Hear, talk, and smell.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
