Job Duties:

The Public Works Fleet Management Division is hiring a Mechanic Technician I (G19 $ 42,536- $65,936) or Mechanic Technician II(G.22, $49,254 - $76,336) - depending on qualifications- for the Marine Service Shop.

The selected candidate will perform repair and maintenance work on boats and similar marine vessels, including but not limited to the following:

• Coordinate repairs and scheduled maintenance with marine vendors and internal City marine vessel users
• Perform repairs such as major tune-ups; replacement of water pumps, hydraulic lines and hoses, and hydraulic trailer brakes
• Perform tasks listed on the Automotive Services Preventive Maintenance Checklist, including oil changes, lubrication, safety checks, battery inspections, and other marine-related maintenance
• Install and maintain electronic components and systems
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair marine engines (inboard and outboard), including outdrives, lower units, and power trim units
• Perform engine rigging for outboard engines
• Test engines, transmissions, propellers, and navigational and related systems to diagnose malfunctions

This position has been designated as Alpha I, and the incumbent may be required to report to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.
CDL Hiring Bonus

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are eligible for a $2,000 hiring bonus, paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

• $500 with the first paycheck
• $500 during the first pay period following the six-month interim evaluation (with a "meets expectations" performance rating)
• $1,000 upon successful completion of the probationary period (with a "meets expectations" performance rating)

- Minimum Requirements:

Mechanic I Minimums:
Completion of eighth (8) grade plus one (1) year of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Automotive Mechanic, Construction Mechanic or General Shop Mechanic or one (1) year as Mechanic Trainee; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver's license

Mechanic II Minimums:
Completion of eighth (8) grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk.
