Aircraft Maintenance/ Mechanic
Amentum is immediately hiring qualified Aviation Electronics Technicians in support of U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Oceana Virginia Beach, VA. VFA-106.
The Aircraft Mechanic 1 performs repairs and maintenance on aircraft, following orders from higher‑grade technicians. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairing aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti‑icing, pneumatic, engine and auxiliary power unit systems, as well as ventilation and heating systems. The role involves reading and interpreting manufacturer and airline maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, and engineering data to determine feasible repair methods.
Specific duties include progressive, phase, periodic and other inspections; inspecting reciprocating engines for cracks, oil leaks, and other defects; detecting and diagnosing engine malfunctions such as sticking or burnt valves; inspecting jet engines for cracks, corrosion, foreign‑object damage, burnt areas, and other faults; and using testing equipment such as ignition analyzers, compression checkers, and jet calibration testers to locate malfunction sources.
The mechanic replaces or repairs worn or damaged components—including carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine‑mounted gearboxes, compressor bleed valves—using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment, removes engines from aircraft for disassembly, inspection, repair or replacement of defective parts, and reassembles and installs engines. Other duties include adjusting, repairing, or replacing electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories, performing pre‑flight, thru‑flight and post‑flight maintenance inspections, flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
The incumbent supervises jack and towing of aircraft, records maintenance activities, verifies completion, and may perform line‑station repairs while specialized in structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies or engine repair.
Must pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check, provide favorable fingerprints in EQIP, complete SF‑85/86 in EQIP if required, and maintain a CAC card. Unfavorable background checks may result in termination.
Minimum Requirements- Shift work and detachments are required.
- Must obtain CDI within 30 days of promotion/hire. High school graduate or equivalent, with a minimum Five (5) years actual and recent organizational level F/A‑18 aircraft maintenance experience with 3 years prior F/A‑18 A‑G Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) or Quality Assurance Representative experience.
- Applicant must hold US Navy 8341/E19A NEC.
- Must have completed Navy Aviation Electronics Technician AT “A” School.
- Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks is mandatory.
- Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties.
- Must have a valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver license (if North Carolina resident).
- Work is performed primarily outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Should be a self‑motivator and work with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to meet physical requirements associated with and/or pass any medical examination requirements related to performing daily assigned tasks.
- Standing, climbing, bending and stooping is required.
- May be required to perform off‑site service on assigned detachments.
- Must be able to obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system which includes a 7‑year background check.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.

US Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location. - Must be able to obtain a T3 Secret Eligible Status.
- 3 years F/A‑18 A‑G O‑level aircraft system maintenance experience.
- Ramp Stamp (restricted/unrestricted).
- A/S32A‑45 tow tractor.
- AM32A‑108 or A/M24M‑6 power cart.
- Release and Control TM / TL.
