Job Duties and

Preferred Qualifications:

The Public Utilities Department – Electrical Support division is seeking Electrician Trainees for their Apprenticeship Program. As an Electrician Trainee you will learn from experienced electricians and develop the skills necessary to assist in the installation of electrical equipment in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. In addition to on-the-job training, eligible Electrician Trainees will be provided with the opportunity to enroll in Electrical coursework through Tidewater Community College.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who has a desire to progress towards becoming a licensed Journeyman Electrician.

Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities:

Assist and/or troubleshoot and repair electric motors, fans, and lighting systems; and install lighting outlets, switches and receptacles.

May assist with the maintenance and testing of emergency generator and fire alarm systems.

Participate in work involving preventive maintenance, distribution panels and equipment, circuit systems, controls and light fixtures.

Participate in repairs, installation and maintenance of fire alarms, public address systems, enunciator and other communication systems to ensure proper operation and to prevent equipment failure.

Drive city vehicles to work related areas for field investigations and other local businesses and suppliers.

Learn how to generate work orders and daily log sheets in a neat and orderly fashion.

Recommend improvements to equipment, processes, work methods and procedures.

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Works in all types of weather conditions and must work nights, weekends, holidays, standby and emergencies as needed.

Preferences:

Completed, currently enrolled in or registering for an associate degree in electrical or mechatronics with an accredited technical or college electrical program.

Work history that includes employment in the electrical or mechatronics industry.

On-the-job training as an electrician helper/assistant.

Prior hands-on experience (e.g., construction, maintenance, wiring).Observed or assisted with reading schematics, blueprints, diagrams, technical documents.

High school or GED plus ability to acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements :
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
