Location:
Virginia (Various locations available), Virginia residents only.

Job Type: Full-time Contract position (grant funded by the state) Typically 3-6 months per placement, two week break between placements.)
Compensation:
Up to $45,000/per year income stipend + standard foster care reimbursement + comprehensive support services included.

About This Role:

This isn’t traditional foster care. This is a full-time professional caregiving position designed as income replacement for dedicated individuals or couples ready to change a child’s life
Virginia's Enhanced Therapeutic Foster Care (ETFC) program provides a critical bridge for youth transitioning from treatment facilities, group homes, or foster homes who can’t manage their needs as they prepare to return to their family or permanent home. You'll focus on ONE child at a time, providing stability, supervision, and therapeutic support while they work toward reunification.

What Makes ETFC Different:

You're part of a clinical team: Weekly therapy sessions, case manager home visits, monthly treatment planning meetings, 24/7 on-call support
Short-term, focused placements: Typically, 3-6 months (not years of uncertainty)
Income replacement model: $45,000/year income stipend allows one parent to dedicate full-time attention without outside employment
Family reunification focus: You actively engage with the child's family through calls, visits, activities, and transition planning
Comprehensive training: TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention), de-escalation techniques, diagnosis-specific training
Your wellbeing matters: Monthly stress assessments, therapeutic support for YOU as needed

Your Responsibilities:

Provide 24/7 supervision and support for one youth at a time with emotional, behavioral, or developmental needs
Maintain trauma-informed, therapeutic home environment
Participate in weekly therapy sessions, case management visits, and monthly treatment team meetings
Engage with child's family/discharge resource through multiple touchpoints (calls, events, activities, appointments)
Implement therapeutic strategies and behavioral interventions with clinical team guidance
Provide post-discharge support (family check-ins for ~6 weeks after transition)
Complete required trainings and maintain foster care licensing

Requirements:
Must-Haves:

✓ Prior foster parenting experience with youth who have emotional, behavioral, medical, or developmental concerns
✓ One parent must NOT be employed elsewhere (or have extreme scheduling flexibility) to provide primary focus on child's needs
✓ No other children currently in the home
✓ Commitment to placement stability through discharge (3-6 months)
✓ Financial stability (able to manage household on one income + stipend)
✓ Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
✓ Pass background checks and home study requirements

Ideal Candidates:

Retired educators, nurses, social workers, or counselors
Current foster parents ready for therapeutic-level care
Former residential treatment or behavioral health facility staff
Empty nesters with parenting experience and emotional bandwidth
Anyone with demonstrated experience supporting youth with complex needs

What You'll Receive:
Financial:

$45,000/year income stipend (paid monthly)
Standard foster care reimbursement for child's expenses
All therapeutic services, training, and support at no cost to you

Clinical Support:

Weekly individual therapy for child (by TBF Therapist)
Weekly family therapy with child's family (by TBF Therapist)
Weekly case manager home visits
24/7 on-call support (phone + in-person crisis response)
Monthly stress level assessments with support services as needed
Weekly internal staffing with full clinical team

Training:

TBRI Caregiver Package
TBRI De-escalation training
Diagnosis-specific training customized to child's needs
Ongoing professional development

Placement Details:

Typically, ONE placement at a time (maximum two)
Expected duration: 3-6 months per placement
Ongoing placements available for those who wish to continue

About the Program:
Enhanced Therapeutic Foster Care is offered by only three agencies in Virginia. This program is at risk of ending due to lack of qualified parents—but these vulnerable youth desperately need this critical stepping stone between treatment and home.
