Motor Equipment Operator III

The City of Virginia Beach - Department of Public Works is looking to hire a Motor Equipment Operator III to join our Street Maintenance Asphalt team.

• Operate heavy-duty, multi-purpose equipment—including single and tandem dump trucks, motor graders, backhoes, excavators, asphalt rollers, snowplows, snow spreaders, front-end loaders, and other equipment —across various terrains and in all weather conditions.

• Perform maintenance and repair work on asphalt roads.

• Perform and conduct routine inspections and basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, reporting any mechanical issues for repair.

• Understand oral and written instructions accurately to ensure safe and efficient operations.

• Serve as acting crew leader in the supervisor’s absence, providing guidance and oversight to team members.

• Strong knowledge of work zone safety practices and traffic control procedures.

• Utilize a work management database system to track tasks and document work performed.

• Comply with safety and drug testing requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal and organizational policies.

• Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class A issued by Virginia or the State of North Carolina.

* This is an Alpha I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, and snow), and/or in response to short–term department needs and/or City–wide emergencies.*

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

• $1,000 with first paycheck
• $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
• $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
