Motor Equipment Operator

The City of Virginia Beach, Department of Public Works, is looking to hire a Motor Equipment Operator III to join our Stormwater Operations team.

• Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
• Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from the job site.
• Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.
• Operate dump truck and/or backhoe in making ditch repairs.
• Operate a Ditch Master.
• Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment, including, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe.
• Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
• Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, cutting down trees, and shoveling sediment.
• Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
• Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC).

This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

A pre-employment physical is required.

The $4,000 CDL (Class A or

B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

• $1,000 with first paycheck.
• $1,000 first pay period following six‑month interim evaluation (with “meets expectation” performance rating).
• $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating).
