Motor Equipment Operator II/III
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator II/III, depending on qualifications.
Starting salaries:
- Motor Equipment Operator II – Starting at $42,536.00
- Motor Equipment Operator III – Starting at $49,254.40
- Safely operate the dredging vessel (Rudee II) while excavating material at Rudee Inlet.
- Safely operate the skiff (small boat) tasks to include connecting/ disconnecting pipelines, towing/ maneuvering the dredge and floating equipment, and transiting crew members to and from land/ floating equipment.
- Safely operate the tender (tugboat) tasks to include towing the dredge and pipelines, setting/ retrieving dredge swing anchors, connecting/ disconnecting pipelines, and transiting crew members to and from land/ floating equipment.
- Safely operate a backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, excavator, and crane in support of the operation.
- Safely operate the skiff, tender, and support equipment needed to perform other associated tasks during maintenance and repair of navigational aids.
- Utilize computer programs onboard the dredge to effectively maximize production.
- Maintain awareness of watercraft using the channel while conducting the operation.
- Ensure the oiler performs regular checks and documents findings accordingly.
- Ensure all precautions are taken to avoid accidents and incidents.
- Ensure all occupants have their PPE on while performing their duties on the dredge and floating support equipment.
- Monitor sea state and weather conditions for changes that may affect the safe operation of the vessels.
- Oil and maintain dredge machinery and mechanical parts.
- Assist in the cleaning of debris and other line blockage problems.
- Paint and clean dredge machinery.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
- Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve the objective.
- Communicate respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and managers.
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Labor Day–Memorial Day: 6:30 am – 5:00 pm;
Monday to Thursday.
Memorial Day–Labor Day: 12:00 am – 10:30 am;
Monday to Thursday.
Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential for Memorial Day–Labor Day.
This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short‑term department needs and/or City‑wide emergencies.
CDL is not required for this position; however, candidates who possess a valid CDL bonus will qualify for a $2,000 bonus.
