Job DutiesThe purpose of the Postal Assistant position is to accurately process, inspect, and distribute all staff and inmate mail within a correctional facility, ensuring security, compliance with regulations, and timely delivery. The role supports daily operations by maintaining organized mail systems, documenting required information, and contributing to the facility’s overall safety and efficiency.
Minimum QualificationsWorking knowledge of basic office practices and procedures. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply written policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to organize and complete work assignments with minimal guidance from others. Demonstrated ability to interpret, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Must be able to lift bags and bulk packages weighing up to 35 pounds, place and retrieve documents/packages from shelves approximately six feet high. Must be able to push a wheeled carrier with mailbags and packages not exceeding 50 pounds. Must also be able to stand, walk and sit for extended times and distances.
Previous working experience keeping records. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply written policies and procedures. Some knowledge of corrections. Skill in working with postal equipment and/or mail sorting systems.
Background Investigation RequirementsAll applicants are subject to a background investigation. Investigations may include fingerprint checks (State Police, FBI); local agency checks; employment verification; verification of education (relevant to employment); credit checks; and other checks based on the position.
Drug Testing RequirementsApplicants applying to a designated safety sensitive position are subject to a pre-employment drug screen. Marijuana use is prohibited for positions that require possession of a firearm or a Commercial Driver’s License in the performance of official duties such as Corrections Officers, Probation Officers, Tractor Trailer Drivers and others.
