Job Duties

The purpose of the Postal Assistant position is to accurately process, inspect, and distribute all staff and inmate mail within a correctional facility, ensuring security, compliance with regulations, and timely delivery. The role supports daily operations by maintaining organized mail systems, documenting required information, and contributing to the facility’s overall safety and efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

Responsible for processing all internal and external mail for staff and inmates within a correctional setting, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and departmental regulations. Qualified applicants will demonstrate working knowledge of basic office practices and procedures, along with proven skill using Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel. Candidates must show the ability to read, interpret, and apply written policies and procedures, as well as follow oral and written instructions.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to complete assignments independently are essential. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and must have prior experience maintaining records. This position requires the physical ability to lift mailbags and bulk packages up to 35 pounds, retrieve and place items on shelves approximately six feet high, and push a wheeled carrier loaded with mail weighing up to 50 pounds.

The role also involves inspecting all incoming and outgoing inmate mail for contraband, distributing departmental mail daily, and maintaining all related documentation and reports.

Additional Considerations

Some experience working with postal equipment or automated mail-sorting systems, as well as familiarity with correctional operations or security procedures. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with strong record‑keeping experience, proven accuracy in handling high‑volume mail processes, and demonstrated ability to maintain regulatory compliance in a structured environment. Experience supporting audits, inspections, or ACA documentation processes.
